NATURE & NURTURE

SOCIAL ENDEAVOUR : PROTECTING OUR ANCESTRAL GENOME

POCO, OUR ADOPTED ANCESTRAL FAMILY MEMBER

POCOFRONT

BACKGROUND

Poco spent the first 9 years of his life in a cage suspended above a workshop in Burundi. Confined and used to attract customers, Poco had so little space he was only able to sit or stand on two legs – quite unnatural for a chimpanzee. He arrived to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in 1995 and has become a completely different chimpanzee. He really likes people and will strut or throw sticks to get the attention of visitors.

POCO’S LATEST UPDATE

The new enrichment structures at the Sweetwaters Sanctuary have been keeping him busy, but he prefers to enjoy them by himself. As he is getting older he is becoming more of a loner. He waits for the other chimpanzees to have their turn and when they wander off goes to fish for honey and other treats.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CHIMPANZEES.

POCOChimpanzees share 98% of our genetic DNA

  • Much like us

Chimpanzees (sometimes shortened to chimps) represent our closest living relative, sharing 98% of our genetic DNA.

  • Complex social lives

Chimps live in vast social communities, consisting of up to about 100 individuals and comprising of several family groups. They have strict hierarchies, with one dominant alpha male.

  • How they get around

They get around by by swinging through trees and by walking on all fours (knuckle-walking), but they can also walk upright on two feet if they want to.

  • Varied diet

While chimps consume a wide variety of foods, including the fruits and leaves of hundreds of plants, they overwhelmingly prefer the fruit of fig or Ficus trees.

Though they also eat meat – their favourite is red colobus monkey – and invertebrates such as termites, this only makes up an estimated 3 per cent of their diet.

  • Reproduction

Females will reach reproductive maturity by age 13 and can give birth at any time of the year, usually to one baby. The infant will cling tightly to its mother’s fur, and then takes rides on her back until two years of age.

  • Handy with tools

Chimps are one of the few animals that are known to use of tools. This includes the use of sticks to retrieve insects from the leaf litter, stones to open up appetising nut contents and leaves to soak up drinking water.

  • Extremely clever

Some chimpanzees have even been able to learn basic human sign language.

  • Taxonomy

Chimpanzees are one of only two species in the genus Pan, the other being the bonobo, and both are found sub-Saharan Africa. It was once thought that chimpanzees and bonobos were one species, but they are now recognised as two distinct species.

The chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) is found north of the Congo river and is split into 4 sub-species. The bonobo (Pan paniscus) is found south of the Congo river and has not been split into any sub-species.

POCO DETAILSPOCO DETAILS 1

8 things you probably didn't know about chimpanzees.

  1. You can tell the difference between a Chimpanzee and a monkey by looking at their backside. Monkeys have tails but Chimpanzees and other great apes do not.
  2. Chimpanzees are Endangered.
  3. Chimpanzees enjoy many of the same food as humans do.
  4. While Chimpanzees aren't good at swimming, they enjoy an occassional dip ones in a while.
  5. Humans aren't descendants of present-day apes, but there's a chance we share a common ancestor.
  6. Chimpanzees do grieve. Chimps have been observed grieving over friends and famiy members. They visit the body, both as individual and in groups, gently touching, sniffing, and grooming the deceased.
  7. They make terrible pets, though we love our Poco. Chimpanzees may look cute especially when they are babies, but they can be very aggressive. Groups of male have the aptitude and motivation to plan and execute attacks on other Chimps, often resulting in serious injury and even fatalities.
